This study investigated the percentage of university students in whom latent feelings of “wanting to die”(suicidal ideation)exist, and their inclination to confess their feelings. Their responses to other persons' suicidal ideation were also investigated using a hypothetical scenario method. Over 30% of the students had experienced suicidal ideation at some time, showing that a considerable number of university students were at risk. The students with suicidal ideation found it easier to talk with a “distant other”(physically and psychologically distant person)than with a “close other.”(physically and/or psychologically close person)In addition, they tended to show more empathy for suicidal ideation in others. The issue of people finding it difficult to confide in “close others” needs to be addressed by enhancing the networks surrounding those people.
