  • Look Inside

Twelve patients underwent aortic valve replace-ment with Bjork-Shiley tilting disc valve prosthesis for aortic regugitation. Pre and post-operative left ventricular function was evaluated.

There were nine patients with ejection fraction higher than 0.35 (G-I) and three patients lower than it (G-II). In G-I, the left ventricular volume (LVESV, LVEDV) and the left ventriular mass decreased significantly after surgery and the ejection fraction returned to normal value. In G-II, the left ventricular volume and the left ventricular mass decreased, however, they were abnormally high values and the ejection fraction decreased after surgery.

The left ventricular function is considesed to be fully reversible postoperatively, if values of LVEDV, wall thickness and LV mass are lower than 350 ml/m2 of LVEDV, 1.5cm of wall thickness and 350g/m2 of LV mass.
