A method to predict ventilatory volume required to maintain normal Paco2 during IPPV and HFV was studied by using a mathematical lung model which consisted of three components, i.e. perfused alveoli, alveolar dead space and anatomical dead space. A ventilation equation which included the effects of alveolar and anatomical dead space was derived and a ventilatory standard based on patient's body weight was calculated by the equation.
