Phasic tricuspid flow velocity obtained by acatheter tip electromagnetic velocity probe was used to characterize the right venticular (RV) diastolic filling in children with heart disease. Fifty patients (pts), aged 11 months to 14 years, were divided into Group (Gp) A (12 pts with normal RV), Gp B (18 pts with isolated RV volume overload), Gp C (7 pts with isolated RV pressure overload) and Gp D (11 pts with RV volume and pressure overload).

Initial tricuspid peak inflow velocity (IPF) during rapid filling phase (RFP) was significantly increased in Gp B, and the ratio of late diastolic peak inflow velocity during atrial contraction phase (ACP) to IPF was elevated in Gps C & D.Analysis of RV filling pattern in terms of dura-tion revealed that the period of slow filling phase (tSFP) was relatively shortened in Gp B and that tACP was prolonged in Gps B & D. In addition, both Gps C & D with RV pressure overload showed the reduced RV inflow volume during RFP and the compensatory increase in that during ACP.
