Analysis of the changing radiographic density in lungs during resting respiration and forced expiration was performed using a high-speed, multi-channel videodensitometer sampling system. This apparatus combined with a 16k-word small digital computer is able to sample sequentially the density of many positions on the videoimage, and the sampling speed is 60 points per second. While the signal/noise ratio is low, this method is valuable to asses the pulmonary ventilation pattern and useful for sequential dynamic analysis of the entire videoimage. The combined use of videodensitometry in the study of ventilation and perfusion lung scintigraphy can provide helpful informations of pulmonary regional ventilation/perfusion relationship.
