The cardio-pulmonary dynamics in essential hypertension were studied by using right heart cathe-terization.

The disturbances were found in the aspects of hemodynamics, factors concerning gas phase, and alveolar functions.

The essential hypertensives were classified into 3 groups according to the E. C. G. finding: A-normal in E. C. G., B-intermediate between A and C, C-typical left ventricular hypertrophy.

The disturbances of the cardiopulmonary functions were minimal in group A, moderate in group B and markedly advanced in group C.

This indicates that the back-pressure effect caused by the systemic hypertension aggravates the pulmonary circulation extremely in group C. Consequentry, we belive that it is clinically important to detect the transition period from group B to C by frequent E. C. G. check-ups.

The early effects of the drugs altering blood pressure, namely C5, C6, Pendiomide, Reserpine, Veriloid, Apresoline, Chlorpromazine, Aminophylline, Noradrenaline and Adrenaline on cardio-pulmo-nary dynamics were also studied and discussed from the various points of view.

In general, it seemed that the agents causing elevation of the pulmonary arterial pressure had good influences on cardio-pulmonary dynamics, whereas the agents depressing the pulmonary arterial pressure had bad influences.
