The frequency of medical treatment for inflammatory bowel disease in older adults is increasing. Given that such patients are at a high risk of developing infections and complications, they should be treated carefully. The clinical characteristics of elderly-onset inflammatory bowel disease are different from those of the younger-onset disease. The disease activity of cases with elderly-onset ulcerative colitis gradually increases with age in Japan. Although novel therapeutics for inflammatory bowel diseases has been successively developed, the establishment of effective and safe treatment strategies for older adults is still required in the future.
