 Purpose: The purpose was to clarify the growth process of assistant nurse managers as nursing administrators.

 Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 nurse managers, and the obtained data were analyzed using the modified grounded theory approach.

 Results: The growth process of the assistant nurse managers consisted of 5 stages: the first stage was a "starting period" they experienced as assistant nurse managers [confusion about their roles]; the second stage was a "struggle period" in which they felt a [budding awareness as administrators] and came to [realize the difficulty of management work] while [practicing management work by trial and error]; the third stage was a "growth period" in which they gained [opportunities for personal growth through management practice]; the fourth stage was a "development period" in which they acquired a [deeper insight into management practice on wards] and [broader perspective on management work for the organization]; and the fifth stage was a "maturity period" in which they developed [awareness of maturity as administrators].

 Conclusion: The provision of support according to the growth stage was suggested to help these nurses acquire the nursing management ability required for administrators.
