Abstract

[Objectives] To clarify what types and levels of skills are required by nursing administrators for newly graduated nurses to be employed in an environment that promotes team medical services with expanded discretion and outsourcing.

[Method] Three Delphi surveys were conducted by email, targeting those who agreed to cooperate with the present study among the 1,159 hospital nursing administrators certified in 2011 by Japanese Nursing Association as approved nursing administrators. The survey consisted of 31 items relating to convalescent care and 117 items relating to medical care assistance, and 6 required levels were set.

[Results] There were 126 questionnaire returned. An analysis of the data revealed agreement on the necessity of 23 of the 31 convalescent care items(74.2%) and 86 of the 117 medical care assistance items (73.5%).

[Conclusion] 1)Nursing administrators tended to require newly graduated nurses to be independent in convalescent care activities and, in contrast, required that these nurses perform the medical care assistance items only under direction. 2)The requirement for supervision in medical care items made by nursing administrators is in conflict with the basic curriculum that teaches nurses to handle these items alone.
