The Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists(JSA)U40/Interactive Task Force(ITF)was established in August 2021 to empower young JSA members to proactively shape the future of the field. This article summarizes a symposium from the JSA 72nd Annual Meeting titled “Balancing Work-Style Reform with the Professional Development and Training of Anesthesiologists.” Following the 2024 implementation of new labor regulations, the medical community faces the critical challenge of ensuring robust professional development within a framework of limited instructional time.

The featured authors provide diverse perspectives on this transition:re-evaluating anesthesiologists’ identity as a catalyst for growth, shifting education from an individual effort to an organizational responsibility, and addressing the unique pressures of high-volume centers. The discussion also introduces a redesigned “ear-learning” system to capture informal training opportunities. In addition, by summarizing a lecture presented by an invited speaker from outside the field of anesthesiology, the symposium organizers use Adlerian psychology’s “social interest” and work-life integration(WLI)to explore in depth the speaker’s key argument, i.e., that work-style reform must begin with increasing physicians’ well-being. This special feature provides both theoretical insights and practical models for fostering the next generation of anesthesiologists while adapting to modern labor standards.
