I am going to talk with you not only as users of nursing diagnoses in your practice but also as potential developers of nursing diagnoses concepts.
In accepting the nursing process as the major scientific approach for delivering nursing service during the past five decades, the nursing profession has also basically accepted the concept of nursing diagnosis to refer to a client's problems requiring nursing solutions. In general, nursing theorists, nurse researchers, and nursing practitioners agree that a nurse, in delivering a systematic nursing service to the client, should go through the step of identifying the client's problems and arriving at a list (i.e., nursing problem statement, list of nursing needs, or nursing diagnoses) that becomes the base for nursing approaches. Nursing diagnosing also has been politically integrated into the system of nursing practice so as to claim legitimation for service provision by nurses in the current economic culture of health care, especially for the purpose of reimbursement.
