The research on the relation between res—piration and circulation was inaugurated in the latter half of the nineteenth century by the human experiment of P. Bert (Paris) un—der low barometric pressure. Ever since until the end of the second decade of the twen—tieth century, physiological and biochemical studies were exclusively done on lactic acid metabolism under oxygen lack and on changes of respiration, circulation and blood gases in high altitude. In the third decade, basic researches on the mechanism of tissue oxydation-reduction were completed.
