麻酔科医から集中治療医への術後申し送りは「情報」「責任」「環境」の3つの要素が，労力に見合う形で調和することで良質なものとなる。具体的には，チェックリストやテンプレートを用いて「情報」を標準化することが最も重要であり，次いで医療従事者間のコミュニケーションとタスクを調整することで「責任」の質と量を確保する。さらに，標準化された方法を電子化したり，申し送りに対する医療従事者の意識改革を実施したりすることで「環境」を整えることも有効である。各施設における「環境」は大きく異なるため，計画-実行-評価-改善plan-do-study-act（PDSA）サイクルにより申し送りを最適化することも重要である。
