重症患者の栄養療法モニタリングには，患者の栄養状態の評価に関するものと，栄養投与そのものを評価するものとがある。栄養状態のモニタリングには，背景としての栄養状態評価と，栄養療法の効果を評価するものがある。それぞれに機器が用いられているが，重症患者における使用についてのエビデンスは限られる。栄養投与のモニタリングには，間接熱量計による消費エネルギー量の測定が用いられる。間接熱量測定は，各国の栄養療法ガイドラインでも使用が推奨されており，近年では，その結果をもとに栄養療法を行うことの有用性が示されている。重症患者の栄養療法モニタリングを通じて，個別の患者により適切な栄養療法が提供できるようになることが望ましい。

Nutrition monitoring for critically ill patients involves monitoring patients' nutrition status, and the balance between their nutritional requirements and the amounts to be administered. There is limited evidence in this area for critically ill patients, despite attempts by numerous investigators. Indirect calorimetry is the only monitoring method supported by sufficient evidence to be recommended by international guidelines to evaluate the energy demand and supply. Recent evidence supports the use of indirect calorimetry, demonstrating survival benefits in critically ill patients. Development of methods to monitor nutrition comprehensively in critically ill patients is crucial to enable meeting the nutrition needs of individual patients.
