院内の酸素の流れについて，基礎的な知識を述べた。主な酸素供給源としては，①主酸素貯槽から中央配管システムで病棟アウトレットへ届けられるもの，②高圧ガスボンベから減圧・流量調節して患者に投与されるもの，の2種類がある。医療ガスである酸素に関する事故は致命的なものが多く，このために多くの法律や勧告が存在する。しかし，医療者の医療ガスに対する知識レベルは非常に低く，ほとんど教育を受けていない状況が推測される。酸素供給のトラブルを回避するにはこれらに関する知識が必要不可欠であり，医療ガスの安全な管理・取り扱いを是非学んでいただきたい。

●院内の酸素供給源は，①酸素貯槽から供給される中央配管システム，②酸素ボンベ，の2種類がある。

●自施設の酸素使用量，配管，アウトレットの確認と，中央監視盤の設置場所を把握しておく。

●酸素ボンベの打刻印から，ガス種類，容積，重量，充塡圧を確認し，酸素ガス量を計算できるようにしておく。

This article summarizes fundamental knowledge on the oxygen supply and its handling in hospitals. Oxygen sources for patients include those delivered from a central oxygen supply to ward outlets through a piping system, and those directly administered from high pressure gas cylinders using regulators with flowmeters to reduce the pressure and adjust flow rates. Since medical accidents associated with oxygen are often fatal, a number of laws, regulations and recommendations regarding oxygen supplies have been developed. Knowledge regarding the appropriate use of medical gases including oxygen and awareness of potential dangers is suboptimal among medical staff. Effective educational programs regarding the safe management and handling of medical gases is urgently required.
