子宮頸部細胞診において，“コイロサイト”はHPV感染に特異的な細胞所見として重要視されてきたが，どの成書においても細胞質の空胞所見に重点が置かれており，核所見についてはほとんど触れられていない．しかし，2009年4月にベセスダシステム2001に準拠した医会分類に変更されてから，コイロサイトの判定基準には細胞質の所見だけではなく，LSILに相当する核異型の存在が必須となった．よって現在は，特徴的な細胞質の空胞所見に加え，LSILに相当する核異型を有する細胞がコイロサイトと定義されている．

Koilocytes have been considered an important indicator of HPV infection in cervical cytology.　In the literature, however, attention has been focused on cytoplasmic vacuoles, and little mention has been made of nuclear features.　However, changes to the Bethesda System in April 2009 stipulate that the criteria for recognition of koilocytes should include not only cytoplasmic findings but also nuclear atypia equivalent to LSIL.　Koilocytes are defined by their characteristic pericytoplasmic vacuoles and the presence of nuclear atypia, being equivalent to LSIL.
