Cervical cytology continues to be the method of choice for mass prevention of cervical cancer. However, there are limitations with regard to sensitivity, specificity, and ability to reproduce results. Brush type device and spatula are recommended devices for sample collection. Two types of cervical cytology are available for cervical cancer screening : smears from conventional cytology and liquid-based cytology (LBC). LBC has enabled the reduction of sampling errors and standardized slide preparation. The important factor is correct sampling from the site 'transformation zone' of potential neoplasia.
