The koilocyte is one of the important morphologic criteria in the diagnosis of cervical human papillomavirus lesions. The present review reported the value of other cytologic evidence of human papillomavirus infection, such as parakeratosis, dyskeratosis, binucleation, multinucleation and smudged nucleus. Dyskeratocytes and binucleated cells in cervical smears are predictive of simultaneous HPV infection. However, patients with these cytologic findings may need a colposcopic punch biopsy and a more careful follow up.
