　咽喉頭部異常感については昔から色々のことがいわれている。きわめて古い文献では本症は重大なヒステリーの一症状とされていた。しかしその後神経学説が進むにつれ，中世においては器官神経症と考えられるようになつた。しかしその後実験医学の進歩とともにしだいに全身または局部の他覚的病変がその原因として指摘されるようになつた。

　これがため咽喉頭部異常感の発生原因については，現在のところ精神神経起源説，全身疾患投影説，局部病変起源説が唱えられるに至つている。

　During the past 1 year, 77 patients, 37 men and 40 women, who complained of abnormal throat sensation were seen. In 69% of these patients the diagnosis was established by means of throat mirror. The majority of patients, were found to be affected with pharyngitis. Other conditions that required attention weremucous membrane hypertrophy, driness, submucous glandular enlargement and cystic degenerations. Chronic imbedded tonsillitis and hypertrophic lingual tonsils also contributed to the trouble. The latter was effectively treated by means of irradiation.

　In the remaining 31% of patients, nasal troubles were found in 9 cases and presence of abnormal cervical spine in 6. In other cases the complaints were caused by trauma of post broncho- or esophaguscopy, overdosage of anti-hypertensive drugs and sublingual nerve paralysis. In the other 2 cases the cause could not be found.
