　日々，変わりゆく日本。そのなかで神経疾患の姿も変わってゆく。それは診療のなかでも実感されるが，歪みのない像をとらえるには疫学的分析を必要とする。

　本稿の目的は神経疾患による日本人の罹患・死亡の動向をのべ，対策のあり方を考察することである。

Changing patterns of the burden of neurological diseases in Japan were evaluated in this review.

Recent trends include: 1) decline of the incidence rate of the pooled total neurological diseases, 2) relative increase of the neurological diseases in the developing ages and the elderly ages, 3) decline of endemic or special regional diseases, 4) decline of the diseases due to environmental causes, whereas endogenous diseases remained stationary.
