I．はじめに

　シンポジウム「神経・筋疾患の動物モデル」の開催に当たり，その序説として，動物モデルの開発について概説する。

　まず，"モデル（model）"という用語についてみると，バイオメディカルリサーチの分野で，この用語が広く使われ始めたのは，1966年Index Medicusのsubjectheadingに"Model"の項が設けられて以来のことである。このsubject headingは1968年には"Model Biologics"と，1970年には"Disease Model，Animals"となって現在に至っている。また，"モデル"についての用語を見ると，英語ではanimal modelという用語がしばしば用いられているが，これはfor human diseaseあるいはfor biomedical researchにつながるものである^1）。わが国においては，"動物モデル"，あるいは"疾患モデル"などの用語が好んで用いられるが，これらは"ヒト疾患の動物モデル"あるいは"ヒト疾患のモデル動物"を意味するものである。

　As the introduction of the symposium on "Animal Models for the Neuro-Muscular Disease", the principles of development and use of animal models for human disease has been discussed.

　Also, a new mutant in the mouse ; peroneal muscular atrophy was explained. This mutant was discovered in the process of inbreeding of the CF#1 mouse. The affected mouse showed a club foot at birth and unusual gait by dropped footin the adult. Anatomical and pathological studies revealed the atrophy of the peroneal muscle group and absence of the common peroneal nerves.
