はじめに

　ヒトの，いわゆる変性疾患群をはじめ，各種の中毒や代謝異常症などのさいにしばしば生ずる脊髄の索変性のパターンは，いずれも著しく複雑ではあるが特徴的である。それゆえ，それらはすでに成書に記載され，診断上にも大きな意義を持っている。

　しかしながら，脊髄が脊椎骨中に頑強に保護されていることによる摘出法の困難さや，脊髄の大半を占める白質が中枢神経組織であることに基づく，固定や包埋法の困難さも加わって，「ヒト」におけるそれぞれの索変性パターンの詳細や発生機序を求めようとする研究は，ようやく始められたと言っても過言でなく，なお広大な未知の領域を残している。

Abstract

　Among the unique patterns of tract degeneration in ALS, it has been obvious that, along with corticospinal tract degeneration, there is also diffuse mild myelin pallor in the ventral aspects of the anterolateral columns outside the corticospinal tracts. As Smith³⁶⁾has pointed out, the anterior aspect of these lateral columns as well as the medial longitudinal fasciculi which are different from pyramidal tracts also revealed Marchi positive granules.
