  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Various attempts to understand the neuronal mechanisms of active locomotor movements have been made since the pioneering studies of Sherrington (1906, 1910) and Brown (1911, 1914). These studies seem to be summarized in three major groups.

The first group is the attempts to understand the intraspinal interneuronal network which generates rhythmic and sequential discharges of different muscles in step cycles of individual limbs. Brown considered that rhythmic alternating activity is centrally programmed in the spinal cord itself.
