 The cranial and spinal nerve roots have their own peculiar structures which are not seen in the other peripheral nerves. They are summarized as follows.

 1) The cranial and spinal nerve roots are located within the cranium or vertebral canal and always bathed in the cerebrospinal fluid throughout their length.

 2) In contrast to mixed spinal nerves which contain both motor and sensory nerve fibers, spinal nerve roots consist of either motor or sensory nerve fibers alone, although some workers indicate that about 15 % of all the anterior root fibers are sensory in nature.
