I．はじめに

　Charcot以来，筋萎縮性側索硬化症（Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis，以下ALS）の組織学的変化について多くの報告がなされてきた（Charcot，1880；Malamud，1968；Brownell et al.，1970；Hirano，1973；Oppenheimer，1976；Hirano et al.，1979）。ALSの神経系病変には顕著な選択性がみられ，第一次および第二次運動神経細胞の系統変性疾患とみなされている。

　近年，このような神経系の病変における神経細胞の変性，脱落の有無ならびにその程度を明らかにするために，神経細胞を定量的に検索する試みがなされてきた。しかしこれまで，脊髄神経細胞のうちで定量的検索の対象となったのは前角（塚越ら，1977；河村ら，1979）あるいは側角神経細胞（塚越ら，1977）であり，すべての脊髄神経細胞を定量的に計測し，灰白質の細胞構築に基づいて検討した試みはきわめて少なく，金光により，大脳半球摘除例における頸髄神経細胞の大きさ別の分布の左右差の検索（金光，1977）およびALS 3例についての頸髄神経細胞の分布の比較検討（金光，1979）がなされているのみである。

I. Introduction

　Since the description by Charcot (1880), the corticospinal tract degeneration and the loss of anterior horn cells of the spinal cord have been emphasized in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and the loss of neurons in the intermediate portion, the lateral and posterior horn has also been discussed.

　For the purpose of clarifying the distribution of lesions in the ALS spinal gray matter, we attempted to make localization atlases of nuclei of the spinal neurons according to their sizes in ALS and control cases.
