霊長類の辺縁系は，比較解剖学的にみると下等哺乳類からの遺産であるが，一般にこの系は情動の発現に重要な役割を演ずるとされているので，視覚動物である霊長類では視覚路を通じて入る情報がこの系の活動に影響するとしても不思議はない。しかし従来の解剖学や生理学は，霊長類の辺縁系への視覚投射について，ほとんど教えるところがなかった。
私は，米国NIMHのMacLean研究室でこの問題についての電気生理学的研究に従事したので，その成績を報告し，いささか考察を加えたいと思う。
In awake sitting squirrel monkeys, photically activated units were obtained from the posteriorparahippocampal gyrus, the parahippocampal por-tion of the lingual gyrus, the fusiform gyrus adjoining to these gyri and the prestriate post-splenial limbic cortex.
The postsplenial cortex appears to be distin-guished by the presence of units activated by the contralateral eye.
A class of units confined to the posterior parahip-pocampal gyrus gave sustained on-responses during ocular stimulation.
