ヒトのコミュニケーションの手段には，言語を用いたものと非言語的なものがある。言語機能は右利きの健常者の左半球がおもに制御している。非言語コミュニケーションには，表情や言葉の抑揚などがあり，これらはおもに情的状態を相手に伝える働きをもつ。神経心理学的な研究から，非言語コミュニケーションは右半球が優位に制御していることが示唆されてきた。われわれの行ったPET実験では，右半球の下前頭葉が表情の評価中に応答を示した。また，言葉の抑揚の弁別や抑揚から感情を評価するときにも右下前頭葉が応答することが知られている。右下前頭葉は非言語コミュニケーションに関与していると考えられる。左半球の下前頭葉は言語野として知られている。下前頭葉には，コミュニケーションの言語的一非言語的情報処理の左右差が存在するのかもしれない。

Language, whether spoken, written, or signed, is primarily controlled by the left hemisphere. On the other hand, human communication also includes a strong nonverbal component. Clinical and experimental studies have suggested that the right hemisphere plays a dominant role in nonverbal communication. However, neural substrates related to nonverbal communication remain unclear. We measured regional cerebral blood flow using positron emission tomography (PET) to determine brain regions involved in the assessment of facial emotion. The right inferior frontal cortex showed significant activation during the assessment of facial emotion.
