  • Look Inside

Facial expressions of emotion are of importance in primate social behaviors. To recognize facial expressions, highly processed visual information is required. Among the structures in limbic system, which has been implicated in emotional functions, the amygdala is suited to be involved in processing facial expressions. The amygdala receives visual inputs from inferotemporal visual area TE. Bilateral removal of the monkey amygdala leads to a variety of abnormal behaviors, such as hypersexuality, oral tendency, and psychic blindness.
