Functional organization of human brain involved in detection of eye gaze direction: A PET study

他者の行動や表情を観察することにより，われわれは他者の意志や意図を理解することができる。この「心の理論」の発現に重要な役割を果たすモジュールのひとつに，相手の視線の動きを検知し相手の注意がどこに向けられているかを判断する能力があげられる。われわれはポジトロンCTを用いて，ヒトが他者の視線の方向を判断しているときに，脳のどこの領域が活動をしているのかを明らかにした。視線が自分自身に向けられているとき，第三者に向けられているとき，の双方で左半球の扁桃核に有意な活動を認めた。視線が自分自身に向けられているときに，右半球の扁桃核や帯状回，島皮質が活動を示した。左半球の扁桃核が視線の方向検知の中枢であること，自分自身に他者の注意が当てられているときには，右半球の扁桃核や大脳辺縁系が活動すること，が示唆された。

Only humans have the ability of making inferences about another individual's state of mind. Determination of the direction of the other person's gaze is essential for such inferences, as is the observation of another person's eyes for the judgment of his mental state. However, neural mechanisms underlying these processes in human brain are still poorly understood. In the present study, therefore, we investigated functional organization of human brain involved in detection of eye gaze direction using positron emission tomography.
