Only humans have the ability of making inferences about another individual's state of mind. Determination of the direction of the other person's gaze is essential for such inferences, as is the observation of another person's eyes for the judgment of his mental state. However, neural mechanisms underlying these processes in human brain are still poorly understood. In the present study, therefore, we investigated functional organization of human brain involved in detection of eye gaze direction using positron emission tomography.
