クローン羊の成功は，古くから真理と思われた老化の進行性，不可逆性を否定し，複雑な脳でさえ，一般成熟体細胞から再生できることを示した。神経系の老化は，機能の低下と細胞数の減少という老化の一般原則の例外ではない。機能低下の大きな原因は脳ミトコンドリア機能低下であり，ミトコンドリア遺伝子の変異による脳筋症もあるが，脳ミトコンドリア機能低下の主因は核の老化過程による。脳の細胞数減少は神経細胞死による。一般細胞の老化は有限分裂性とテロメア短縮によるが，神経細胞のテロメアは短縮しない。神経栄養因子によって神経細胞が維持される。活性酸素による神経細胞の破壊もある。不溶性凝集物によるプリオン病，アルツハイマー病などには共通点があるだけでなく分子シャペロンによる治療の可能性もある。

The success of the clone sheep totally changed the established idea of irreversibility and progressiveness of aging. Even a complicated brain can be regenerated from a nucleus of a mature somatic cells. The aging is characterized by the decrease of both activity and number of cells, which are also found in the aging of brain. The decrease in the activity is partly caused by mitochondrial DNA mutation, but mainly by the aging of the nucleus. The decrease of neuron is caused by apoptosis which may be prevented by nerve trophic factors. In addition, the roles played by telomere, insoluble aggregates and chaperone are also discussed.
