Mitochondrial dysfunction associated with aging and degenerative diseases leads to increase of intracellular [NADH]/[NAD+] ratio. This condition named NADH crisis put cells under hyper-reductive stress, resulting in increased production of reactive oxygen species and causing various metabolic alterations in carbohydrates and lipids. Means that ameliorate the hyper-reduction stress might prevent at least in part deleterious effects of mitochondrial dysfunction in both the aging process and adult-onset diseases.
