　神経病理学における定量的な検索の意義，人の眼の力と限界，および今日的な計測方法と理論を概説した。神経病理学的な診断基準はその客観性を上げるため，少しずつ様々な形で定量的所見を取り入れつつあり，それらが近い将来世界の基準になっていく可能性がある。この基準に適応し，また脳の研究をより効果的に進めるため，国内外で解剖時に，ある程度共通した方法による脳の標本処理を行って，脳標本を全国的，世界的に活用するbrain bankシステムを構築すべきであろうと考えられる。

　Significance and methods of quantitative examination in neuropathology, and power and limit of observation in humans are reported and discussed. Quantitative examination is a help of the observation, and the fruits of the examination are generalization, numerization and schematization of the neuropathological findings, and analogy of neuronal function. To conform quantitative diagnostic standards in various neurodegenerative diseases and for comparison, a united or common way of brain-tissue processing at autopsy and brain cutting should be adopted. Cooperative use of rare case and normal subjects is necessary（world wide brain banking system）.
