　1975年，Joseph Shlomaiら^1）は実験的研究によりZnイオンがhcrpes simplexvirus DNA dependentのDNA palymeraseの阻害をおこす事を証明したので，我々は1977年4月よりこれを臨床的に応用し単純ヘルペス性角膜炎の症例に0.3％　Zinc水を点眼した。症例は表在型16例，混合型13例，実質型21例の50例で，この結果，Zinc水の点眼は副作用もなく，すべての症例に使用可能で連用がきき，併用禁忌もなかった。表在型ではZinc水単独でも効果があり，他の型においては再発防止の意味でも有効であった。またZinc水は長期間安定で安価でありヘルペス性角膜炎の治療薬として期待される。

We used topical instillation of 0.3% zinc sulfate solution in the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis since 1977. As rationale, this procedure was based on the report that zinc ions inhibited DNA synthesis by herpes simplex virus through depression of the DNA-polymerasc.

The cases included superficial type (16 eyes), mixed type (13) and parenchymatous type (12). The findings have shown that topical zinc sulfate is effective to any type of herpes simplex keratitis is free of side effects. The treatment was most effective in superficial type. It also manifested effects in preventing recurrence of keratitis of all types.
