　本症は比較的稀な疾患で，Harrison（1948）によればHutchinson（1890），Schmidt（1930），Horton（1932）等の発表以来75例の記載がある。米英からの報告が主であるが，最近独逸でもFrangenheim（1951），Mehmel （1954）等の記載が見られる。吾国では未だ記載のない疾患である。本症はHorton,Magath，並にBrown（1932）により側頭動脈炎Temporal Arteritisと命名された疾患であるが，其後Kilbourne並にWolff（1946）により脳並に網膜血管も屡々侵されることから頭蓋動脈炎Cranial Arteritisなる名称が提唱されている。然しこれら動脈に限らず大動脈以下多くの弾力線維性大筋肉性動脈も侵されることから上記の名称は不適当と云う学者もある。尚Gilmour （1941）は中膜に巨細胞を伴う肉芽腫の見られるのが組織学的特徴であると云う理由から巨細胞性動脈炎Giant-Cell Arteritisなる名称を提唱しているが，臨床的にはその症状をよく象徴するTemporal Arteritisなる名称に矢張り捨て難い味があるので，私共はこゝに敢えてこの名称を踏襲したものである。

A woman, aged 25years, had an attack of severe pain in the right scalp and lost the sight of the right eye within a few days, and after six months lost the sight of the left eye in the same way. There was optic atrophy with marked attenuation of the retinal arteries in both eyes. Since it was difficult to palpate palsation of both the carotid arteries and the left super-ficial temporal artery, pulsless disease was doubted nevertheless optic fundus finding was different from it.
