1952年Harbertは結膜嚢に寄生する細菌中に抗生物質を生産するもののある事，之等の大部分は葡葡状球菌であつて非常に多くの人々が保菌している事を報告した。けれども此の抗生物質の定性並びに臨床的意義にについては未だ研究されていない。私はIowa大学Braley教授の研究室に於いて此の問題の研究を行い若干の結果を得たので同教授の厚意によりここに発表する。
1. Antibiotic forming staphylococcus strains were isolated from normal and conjunctivitis pa-tients. Of the total number of colonies 7% of the strains originated in conjunctical sac 20% showed an antbiotic activity.
2. The antibiotic forming nature seemed to be transfereable but some weak antibiotic for-mers lost their activity during several transfers on blood agar. Rich nutrition of the media is much better for the antibiotic formation.
3. This antibictic substance seemed to be produced at the end period of bacterial prosagation.
