It is a great pleasure and privilege to speak before this distinguished faculty and its guests, among whom I notice many of my pupils and friends． I regret the absence of Prof． Rei Hayashi, lately deceased, whose kindly and courteous personality made him beloved of all in my clinic．
It is obviously impossible, in the time at my disposal, to discuss all of the multifarious recent developments in the field of neuro—logy． I can only give you typical examples of the sort of investigations now being pursued in my country． We must not confine our attention entirely to clinical studies， since advances in the clinic are usually the outcome of more fundamental studies of the nervous system．
