要旨●NHPHは，検出法，培養が困難であったこともあり，H. pyloriの影に隠れてきた側面がある．しかし，19世紀後半には動物の胃内の螺旋菌の存在が報告され，20世紀前半にはヒトの胃粘膜内に数種の螺旋菌の存在が報告されており，H. pyloriおよびNHPHの推定が可能となった．1987年以降は，症例報告が積み重なり，疾患との関係や自然宿主について明らかになってきた．遺伝子解析などにより明確な診断や病原因子の解明が実現し，H. pyloriとの違いも明らかとなりつつある．

　The investigation of NHPH（Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter）is presumably behind H. pylori due to difficult diagnosis, including via the culture method. Research history of Helicobacter revealed that early animal studies included NHPH although they could not be identified. Furthermore, numerous case reports have accumulated and revealed the relationship between NHPH and chronic gastritis, nodular gastritis, gastric mucosa−associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, etc., since the reports by McNulty, Dent, and Heilmann in the 1980s. Moreover, precise NHPH species classification and pathogenetic factor identification become gradually possible, which are expected to reveal the actual clinical significance of NHPH in comparison with H. pylori.
