　現在まで，各種胃病変自体については，あらゆる方面から検討されている．その結果，胃潰瘍および胃ポリープなどを母地としての胃癌の発生は，かつて主張されていたよりもかなり低率であると最近ではいわれている．

　そのため胃病変の成り立ち，発生母地および癌化などを考えるためには，病巣とそれ以外の胃粘膜の状態との間に関係があるかないかを検索してみる必要があると考えられる．

　Of protruding lesions of the stomach surgically resected, those of the epithelial nature were divided into polyp (further subdivided into hyperplastic polyp and metaplastic polyp) and protruding type of early cancer. Our attention was centered on the atrophic mucosal changes and the degree of intestinal metaplasia that would both come out around the original lesions. Histopathological examination of these changes shows that the afore-mentioned mucosal changes were far less evident in the stomach with hyperplastic polyp, and they displayed no tendency to become more manifest with advancing age. On the other hand, atrophic mucosal changes and intestinal metaplasia were observed to be of very high degree around the lesions in protruding variety of early gastric cancer.
