　われわれが“胃隆起性病変”という新しい言葉とその考え方を提唱したのは，1965年秋に札幌で開催された内視鏡学会と胃集検学会との合同シンポジウム“胃ポリープについて”の席上であった．

　今回，胃隆起性病変の形態について述べるに当たり，なぜわれわれが新しい言葉を考え出さなければならなかったか，その点についてまず説明したうえで，その形態について述べたいと思う．

　A proposal to reconsider views on polypoid lesion of the stomach was made by us in 1965 of which originated from a confusion in the definition of the so-called polyps of the stomach both clinical and pathological.

　Thus polypoid lesion of the stomach was categorized into four types according to the appearance of the originating area. (Fig. 1) Its grouping according to size and shape is very helpful in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant polypoid lesion of the stomach even today. (Fig. 3, 4) 　Moreover, the condition at the surface, that is, the degree of elevation and depression, may become one criterion in judging it as benign or malignant. Therefore, it is very important to thoroughly depict the appearance of the lesion by x-ray and endoscopy when making its diagnosis.
