要旨　消化管（食道，胃，大腸）の癌の深達度診断について総論的な事項を記載した．深達度とは，癌浸潤の最深部の1点を表現するものであり，浸潤パターンは癌の量的な拡がりを表現するものである．深達度の亜分類は，むしろ，浸潤パターンの亜分類と言うべきものである．それぞれの臓器において，癌の深達度と浸潤パターンには特徴があり，それらは治療法の選択と密接な関係がある．そして，現時点での深達度診断の意義は，内視鏡的粘膜切除（EMR）の適応を決定するための重要な情報を得ることに存在することを強調した．

　The diagnosis of invasive depth of gastrointestinal cancer (esophagus, stomach, large bowel) was generally considered. The invasive depth refers to a point of the deepest part of cancerous invasion whereas the invasive pattern indicates puantitate extension of the invasion. In this sense subclassification of the invasive depth should be better named subclassification of the invasive pattern. There are some particular characteristics in the invasive depth and pattern of each gastrointestinal cancer, which are closely related to the selection of treatment method. The modern significance of the diagnosis of invasive depth exists in obtaining important information to determine the indication for endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of early gastrointestinal cancer.
