Abstract

Viruses, unlike bacteria, cannot multiply on their own and thus need to live in the hosts. Therefore, understanding how viruses infect host cells and how they multiply in the hosts is important for understanding viral infections as well as for developing vaccines and therapeutic agents. Viruses use a variety of host cell molecules to enter the cells. In addition, because the hosts have immune mechanisms against viruses, viruses have acquired various immune evasion strategies. Therefore, in order to understand viral infectious diseases, it is very important to elucidate the functions of the interactions between viruses and various host molecules. We have been focusing on the interactions between viral molecules and host molecules, and have elucidated not only new immune evasion mechanisms of viruses, but also membrane fusion mechanisms during viral infections and new functions of antibodies in viral infections. In this paper, we mainly review our findings on the regulatory mechanisms of infection by herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, and SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
