A case of tuberculosis verrucosa cutis on the right buttock

Abstract An 87-year-old man presented with purpulish-red indurated erythema on the right buttock. Ziehl–Neelsen staining for skin specimens and tissue fluid swab culture for mycobacteria were negative. Finally, M. tuberculosis was cultured from his tissue after 12 weeks. He was successfully treated with combinations of multiple anti-tuberculosis drugs. When the density of M. tuberculosis is small, it may be difficult to confirm it’s presence in cultures of tissue fluids and tissue culture should thus be considered.
