Along with development of endoscopic therapies, various endoscopic closure techniques have been invented for prevention of postoperative adverse events and completion of advanced endoscopic therapies. Endoscopic closure by conventional clips was first performed for a gastric mucosal defect after endoscopic polypectomy in the 1970s, and currently several techniques --e.g., simple clipping, clip-based closures, over-the-scope clip closure, suturing using dedicated devices, and shielding techniques-have been devised and clinically introduced directly or via animal trials. Every technique has merits and demerits; therefore sufficiently understanding each technique is important. Knowing historical changes in the development of closure techniques will enable us to choose an optimal method depending on the situation.
