Background:Against the backdrop of anesthesiologist shortages and physician workstyle reforms, our university has been advancing task shifting/sharing with perianesthesia nurses(PANs). Concerns were subsequently raised about the potential impact of PANs on junior physicians.
Methods:We investigated medical students’, residents’, and anesthesiology fellows’ perceptions of PANs via an anonymous questionnaire.
Results:A total of 113 responses to the questionnaire were received. Many(72%)of the respondents recognized collaboration with PANs as an effective measure to address the anesthesiologist shortage. However, some expressed concerns that PANs might take work(n=10)or educational opportunities away(n=30)from the respondents.
Conclusions:These results indicate that it is necessary to(ⅰ)establish task allocations for PANs, medical students, residents, and anesthesiology fellows that are based on patient risks, and(ⅱ)verify whether any work or educational opportunities are actually being taken away.
