Seishu Hanaoka, a Japanese pioneer in anesthesiology, wrote over 200 Chinese poetry. As described in his poetry, Seishu had a beloved from Kibi(Okayama)whom he met at a certain mentor’s home while studying in Kyoto. Individuals who are described as mentors in the titles of Seishu’s poems are Tosho Shimura, Nanyo Hara, Yoshii Tani, Taitaido Sogo, and another unnamed mentor whose death was mourned in Seishu’s poetry. We believe that Seishu may have met his beloved at Tosho Shimura’s residence, and we thus investigated Shimura’s friendships and activities in Okayama;however, we were unable to find Seishu’s beloved. Based on this investigation, it appears that Seishu may have married between 1786 and 1788. Although no documents show an encounter between Seishu and Nanyo Hara, Seishu’s Chinese poetry suggests that he met Nanyo Hara during his youth. We speculate that the mentor whose death was mourned in Seishu’s Chinese poetry might have been Kashu Momotani or Seishu Sakakibara.
