Now, interventional Radiology(IR)is playing an important role in palliative medicine. For example, it is well-known that percutaneous osteoplasty, radiofrequency and cryo-ablation, and transcatheter arterial embolization is useful for pain management and percutaneous gastrostomy and percutaneous transesophageal gastro-tubing is effective for decompression of malignant bowel obstruction. Beside this, there are many IR-procedures are useful for palliative medicine e. g. stent placement for superior and inferior vena cava syndrome, peritoneo-venous shunting for ascites, arterial chemotherapy for local advanced malignancies with penetrating odor, and so on. IR has a high affinity for palliative medicine, and I think IR and palliative medicine will cooperate more and more in the future.
