Objective
This study aimed to determine the effects of a seminar on understanding and awareness of cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination for mothers provided by midwives who are involved in community maternal and child health care.
Methods
Pre-and post-seminar questionnaires regarding demographic data, knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening, HPV vaccination, and comments and suggestions were completed by 366 mothers (age range, 30 - 34 years) in city A. We separated the women into one group that underwent periodical examinations for cervical cancer (group A; n = 300) and another that did not (group B; n = 66).
Results
Scores for the items associated with cancer awareness, “examination leads to early detection”, “I want to be periodically examined for cervical cancer” were significantly higher for both groups after the seminar. Those for the items associated with cervical cancer awareness of “I am afraid of cervical cancer examination” and “I dislike cervical cancer examinations more than other tests” were significantly lower after the seminar.
Scores for knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination were significantly higher after the seminar.
Conclusions
Knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer, cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination improved in both groups after the seminar.
