This study investigated the effects of angle of peel when removing medical tape from the skin of elderly women. In 10 subjects, 8 segments of acrylic adhesive tape were placed on the bilateral thighs and peeled off 24 hours later at 6 angles of peel(30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 150°, 180°). The data consisted of the amounts of stratum corneum stripped, the peel force, the time required for redness to fade and the feeling of irritation.

The amounts of stratum corneum stripped did not significantly differ among the 6 angles of peel. The peel force required to strip the adhesive tape at 30° and 60° was significantly more than that required to strip the tape other peel angles. The time required for redness to fade after tape stripping at a peel angle of 30° was significantly longer than the times required at 90°, 120°, 150°, and 180°. Concerning the feeling of irritation during the tape stripping, that produced at 30° was significantly worse than the irritation produced at 90°, 120°, 150°, or 180°.

These findings suggest that a peel angle greater than 90° causes less skin irritation.
