Abstract

Mycobacterial immunity was evaluated by tuberculin skin testing(TST) from May 2000 to July 2000 among 204 students of a nursing college. The average age of the subjects was 20.0±1.9 years ranging from 18 to 35. A positive TST was defined as a redness size of 10mm or larger in diameter. One hundred seventy-two (84.3%) of the 204 students had a positive TST and thirty-two(15.7%) had a negative TST. The number of low, moderate and high positive responders was 125(61.3%), 17(8.3%) and 31(15.2%), respectively. The timing of BCG vaccination had a significant influence on the size of redness. The mean redness size was significantly lower in students vaccinated during junior high school and at the time of extra-checkups. Approximately 15% of the students could not identify when they received BCG vaccination. The negative rate of 21.8% in freshmen and sophomores was significantly higher than that of 8.7% in juniors and seniors, suggesting a potential risk of exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis during the period of clinical training.

These results indicate that there is a critical need to heighten awareness of the increased risk of occupational exposure to tuberculosis in nursing students. All nursing students should undergo mandatory or routine TST and be well informed their own mycobacterial immunity.
