Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to ascertain the factors that adolescent asthma patients recognize as important for collaboration with medical caregivers during asthma treatment.

Method: A semi-structured interview was conducted with 24 junior high school-age or older asthma patients who received regular allergy outpatient treatment at three facilities(a university hospital, a pediatric hospital and a clinic) in the Tokai region. Interview data was recorded verbatim and categories were extracted through qualitative analysis.

Results: Adolescent asthma patients considered collaboration to mean the sharing of goals through a process of "dialogue," collaboration based on a "relationship of trust," and the fulfillment of "responsibilities" by themselves to achieve this.

Conclusion: The results suggested the importance of building relationships of trust with adolescent asthma patients, helping to clarify issues and set goals from the perspective of the asthma patient through a process of dialogue, and empowering all collaborative partners to enable them to fulfill their roles.
